Welcoming Chihiro
Yes, it's a Sunday, but I'm writing to announce the arrival of a new chinchilla to our home. I was contacted last week by Christy from Dry Bones Dance; Christy had a friend who wasn't able to give his chin as much time and attention as he would have liked, and was eager to place her in a loving home. Christy kindly suggested us, and so this morning, just after 9:00AM, Chihiro arrived.
Chihiro -- whose full name will now be Chihiro Pango Massionfruit Schwyzer -- is a beautiful standard grey female, sweet-tempered and gentle and curious. It is a joy to have a chin in our home again. We've grieved the loss of our beautiful Matilde for four months now, but now are ready to open our hearts to new little ones.
Here she is running on her wheel; click to enlarge.
She'll be getting company soon -- watch for more chinchilla news!
Chihiro as in 千尋?

The protagonist of Hayao Miyazaki's delightful (and feminist-friendly) movie Spirited Away was named Chihiro; perhaps your new chinchilla was named after her?

Oh for a lease that allowed roommates small and fuzzy ... le sigh.

I'm betting the "Swept Away" reference too... now we really have to see the movie.
Yes, "Pango Massionfruit". It's a poignant inside family joke. In my father's final weeks, as he was slipping away from cancer, his one pleasure was very sweet, sugary sodas and juices. He loved one particular passionfruit mango blend by Ocean Spray, except he called it "pango massionfruit." In a quirky way, the name is to honor him.
Papa died eleven days after our little Matilde died, and he loved chinchillas almost as much as my wife and I do...

Hmm, Gdr and Amba, I thought "-hiro" was a suffix for (generally) masculine Japanese names. And yet there's a female character in one of Miyazaki's films named Chihiro. Interesting.
Anyway, Hugo, congratulations on the new addition to the family! Kawaiiiii desu neeeee! ('Very cute indeed.')

Aww.... enormous congratulations, Hugo - she is a doll. I bet you're really glad to have a furry friend back in the house. I don't know what I'd do without mine.
