Quote Meme

Here's a blogging meme for you:  What quotation, from any source other than Shakespeare or the Bible, most resonates with you today?  What quotation most resonated with you in your teenage years?

When I was a teenager, my favorite quote (it was in my high school yearbook) was from Thoreau:

"If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer.  Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away."

Today, my favorite at age 39 is on my office wall:

Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a great battle.

--Philo of Alexandria

UPDATE:  I forgot my other contemporary favorite:

Christians have never dealt well with the inner darkness of the redeemed.

-- Walter Wink

Ain't that the truth.

Didn't Thoreau also say that "men have become the tools of their tools?" Sounds like this would be the quote appropriate for some of the folks in the comments below. Though somehow I suspect Thoreau meant something a little different.

My junior year English teacher wrote this on the board, and it was my favorite one for the rest of my high school career.

Oh what a tangled web we weave,
When first we practise to deceive!
-Sir Walter Scott

My favorite quote now is a little cliche because it's so popular, but it has saved me from getting in many verbal arguments, gossiping, wasting resources, etc.

"You must be the change you wish to see in the world."
-Gandhi

No matter how subtle the wizard, a knife between the shoulderblades will seriously cramp his style.

As a young adult, Eowyn's line from Lord of the Rings.

"I fear a cage--To stay behind bars until use and old age accept them and all chance of valor has gone beyond recall or desire."

"We are here on Earth to do good to others. What the others are here for, I don't know." -W.H. Auden

the secret of life is enjoying the passage of time ~james taylor
You know what your problem is, it's that you haven't seen enough movies - all of life's riddles are answered in the movies.
~ Steve Martin

The pure and simple truth is rarely pure and never simple- Oscar Wilde

As far as snarky goes, I always liked F. Kennedy's response to a heckler:

Heckler: "Are you a lesbian?"
Kennedy: "Are you my alternative?"

As far as enlightening, I always liked Mark Twain: "I have never let my schooling get in the way of my education".

"The Constitution only gives people the right to pursue happiness. You have to catch it yourself." - Benjamin Franklin"

Now:

"Christianity has not been tried and found wanting; it has been found difficult and not tried." - G.K. Chesterton

"Anything worth doing is worth doing badly." G.K. Chesterton

As a teenager:

"Some kind of innocence is measured out in you,
You think you know me but you haven't got a clue" - Lennon/McCartney

"They need what you can be when you are no longer afraid. When you are no longer looking for reasons to live, but can simply be."

-- Lorien, in the Babylon 5 episode "Hour of the Wolf" by J. Michael Straczynski.

I forgot the teen quote:

When the white eagle of the North is flying overhead
And the browns, reds and gold of autumn lie in the gutter, dead.
Remember then the summer bird with wings of fire flaying
Come to witness spring's new hope, born of leaves decaying.
As new life will come from death, love will come with leisure.
Love of love, love of life and giving without measure
Gives in return a wondrous yearn of a promise almost seen.
Live hand-in-hand and together we'll stand on the threshold of a dream.

-- From "The Dream" on the Moody Blues "Threshold of a Dream" album

"If you want something you've never had before, you have to do things you've never done" ....got it from your blog! Not sure I have it right though. Everyday I run or go up the mountain and I ask myself, "why is there nobody out here doing this"? Doesn't matter what time I do it, could be 10:00PM or 7:00AM....nobody goes up that mountain! And very few people run very far, so I figure I'm ahead of the crowd already, so I'll just keep on going!

My favorite quote - from Fritz Perls "I am not in this world to live up to your expectations and you are not in this world to live up to mine. You do your thing and I do mine, and if by chance we meet, that's great; if not, it can't be helped." (May be a bit paraphrased in there.)

I don't even remember where it's from but I wrote it on one of my college notebooks and have kept it since:

"Much of your pain is self-chosen."

Even though we may not choose the pain per se, we still want whatever is on the other side of the pain enough to keep going through it.

I have two favorite quotes.

The funny one: "The Feminist agenda is not about equal rights for women. It is about a socialist, anti-family political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism, and become lesbians." Pat Robertson - 1992 Republican National Convention

And the serious one (perhaps a bit cliché): No act of kindness, however small, is ever wasted.

"She would of been a good woman," The Misfit said, "if it had been somebody there to shoot her every minute of her life."

--from Flannery O'Connor's "A Good Man is Hard to Find"

First came to me when Gray Davis, facing recall, started signing progressive legislation that earlier, he would have vetoed. Then, when I started becoming personally introspective in the face of great personal tumult, I saw it as more personally instructive.
