Thanks for enlightening me on that piece of history. Your piece also reminds me of the struggle for equality that gays have had to strive to achieve. The task is still not finished. The issue of gay marriage is on the front burner today, and is very important for many reasons, especially for those living in a committed relationship when it comes to caring for their partner, and property rights.

There's a lot about Reagan that I wish Bush would go back and study - and I guess that's more to crack again at W than to praise Reagan. Unfortunately, perhaps, I have this biting pain at the back of my head when his (Reagan's) name comes up as I more clearly remember his invasion (by agents, not armies) and further annihilation of my country and it's inhabitants just after they'd managed to wrest power back from generations of US planted dictators. Dirty fingers in Nicaragua belonged to many more than Reagan but I grew up watching what he did; that's what I know.

I appreciate that anecdote as well; it adds some layers to the man of which I had not been aware. (And I would have been happier had, say, one in ten of the people who have hate-mailed me in the past two days responded with anything nearly this compelling.)

I don't think it changes my appraisal, though. He went to bat to a limited extent for gays in California as a former Governor, but nationwide as President he would not take the risk even with thousands of lives on the line. A person's character can be revealed by his response to a crisis -- Mayor Lindsay walking the streets of New York the night Martin Luther King Jr. was killed, Gov. Riley in Alabama alienating his entire political base by supporting tax increases, certainly others.

Reagan's response to AIDS was that it was happening to other people and need be none of his concern. I can't and won't forgive him for that.

Thanks, Mike, for your visit and your thoughts -- and I appreciate the fact that many of those who have come down so hard on you in the past 48 hours have really failed to see the core cause of your righteous anger.
